Welcome to the
Cabarrus County Chapter of the
Autism Society of
North Carolina
In January 2005 a
small group of parents of autistic children founded the Cabarrus County
Chapter of The Autism Society of North Carolina. Our group has grown
substantially in the past 3 years. This year we will once again be committed
to our core initiatives, supporting our families, and promoting awareness by
offering the following:
Family
Events: These are organized activities, such as bowling parties, picnics,
Family Fun game and craft days, holiday parties, etc. for our families to
come together, socialize, and network in a safe and fun environment.
Autism
Awareness Fair: This annual event provides an opportunity for the autism
community and organizations offering therapies, treatments, and information
about services for those affected by autism to come together.
Book
Donation: Our chapter donates books and reference materials about autism to
the local library system. This year we will be doubling our donation effort
from prior years.
Teacher
Grants: Our chapter provides the James P. Garrison Grant to local teachers.
These grants allow teachers in a variety of classroom settings to purchase
additional materials to help educate students with autism.
Educational
Seminars: Educating the community is a critical part of awareness project.
This year we will be hosting sessions for local law enforcement and rescue
workers to help educate them about autism.
Website:
Our website offers information for those wishing to learn more about autism.
The website also offers links to other sites for extensive information and
resources. In addition, there are inspiring pictures of our loved ones
participating in recreational activities and events. We provide a positive
environment for parents and professionals to meet each other and increase
our knowledge of autism and how we can help our children and our community.
Workshops:
A new venture in 2008 for our chapter is to sponsor and host workshops to
help our families. We will host at least 2 seminars this fiscal year.
The Autism Society of North Carolina strives to create a community where
people within the autism spectrum and their families receive respect,
services, and support based on individual differences, needs, and
preferences.
ASNC has a Charlotte
Area Advocacy Office that staffs two Parent Advocates to provide support and
information to parents in 9 counties surrounding Charlotte. Our area Parent
Advocates are Nancy Popkin
and Kim Tizzard office number (704) 894-9678.
We look forward to being positive advocates in our community!
Autism - Just So You Know...
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the second most common developmental
disability.
Autism is
the fastest growing developmental disability in the world today—increasing
at an annual rate of 10-17 percent—more than 1.5 million Americans currently
live with autism and as many as one in every 150 children is diagnosed with
the condition each year. Autism has become a public health crisis, with
millions of families desperate for solutions, resources and policy
improvements.
There are an estimated 30,000 North Carolina families affected by ASD
and the number grows each day.
Chances Are, You Or Someone You Know, Knows
Someone With ASD!!!
